Welcome

STJ Magazine is back this summer and packed full of this year’s best buys, competitions and events.

We’ve been practising our singing with the impending arrival of our X Factor booth, and we’ll need our voices to be in top form if we’re to be in with a chance of winning big!

The fashion pages are packed full of ideas so you can look your best for your performance. So what are you waiting for? Have you got the X Factor?

And the Winner Is...

If you’ve ever sat glued to the box on a Saturday night watching the latest group of hopefuls compete for the top spot in ITV’s X Factor, then this one is for you!

Kids, young and old, will be flocking to St John’s Shopping Centre this summer to record their own talents in our very own X Factor kiosk. If you’re especially keen, you can even pop onto our website www.stjshopping.co.uk/xfactor and upload your recording to the national competition where you will be in with a chance of winning some big X Factor prizes from Photo-Me.

If, like us, you save your best performances for singing in the bath, there is a second opportunity to win BIG in our “And the Winner Is...” competition which will run from 1st July—15th August. We’ve got £500 worth of vouchers to give away for some of St John’s Shopping Centre’s stores including HMV, Poundland, Claire’s Accessories, Game and River Island.

Entry forms will be available in all St John’s Shopping Centre retailers when you spend £10 or more in store.

Better get started on the singing practice. Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry, Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry....... Fah, lah, lah!

Summer Love

You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped into a time machine this summer and have been whisked back into the 1960s.

The catwalks are awash with peace, love and understanding so braid your hair, dig out your pink sunglasses and pay homage to the decade that brought us the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Mary Quant and Woodstock.

We loved some of the kitsch T-shirts and pieces of jewellery currently available in store so we’re featured them here for you. Always fun to spread a little love. Peace man.

Summer Blues

We’re loving the vibrant blues that are dominating the cat walks this summer. You can’t beat some of the bright blue maxi dresses and cool blue denim shorts that are on offer at many of the fashion retailers in St John’s Shopping Centre, Perth. There is something for everyone.

If you’re looking to dress it up, you’ll love Monsoon’s selection of dresses. If you’re looking to keep it cool and casual then get those denim shorts out and show off your tanned legs. Finish off your look with a spritz of Marc Jacobs “Daisy” from The Perfume Shop.

Summer Gold

At the risk of sounding like a classic Spandau Ballet song, Gold has undoubtedly been the success story of the credit crunch.

With prices soaring, it has become a highly sought after commodity and its wealth defining properties have been mirrored in this summer’s catwalk fashions.

Jackets and dresses are embellished with gold sequins and tailoring, jewellery is unabashedly statement based and even your shoes are getting in on the act.

It all adds up to a bit of everyday glitz and glam. Who can resist that?

Of course not!

We’ve sought out some of the best items available in St John’s Shopping Centre, Perth, to ensure you make it a day to remember for all the family.

So pop on your trilby, and get out into the great outdoors!

Summer Reads

Now is the perfect time to load up on your holiday reading. Waterstones in St John’s Shopping Centre, Perth, have picked four books which they expect to be this summer’s top reads.

So pop on down and pick up a great read for those hot summer nights.

Tabloid Girl by Sharon Marshall, £6.99
Sharon Marshall was a tabloid reporter for ten years. Along the way she saw and did some Very Bad Things. She also had a spectacularly lousy love life. It took the entire decade to realise the two may be connected.

In her hilariously honest memoirs she reveals what really goes on behind the scenes at a major tabloid newspaper. What celebrities (secretly) do to get into the headlines. And whether a job which involves fighting with popstars, pretending to be a swinger and provoking a fuming Jeremy Paxman EVER make you marriage material?

The Passage By Justin Cronin, £20
An ambitious epic about a virus that nearly destroys the world, and a six-year-old girl who holds the key to bringing it back from the brink.

I Think I Love You By Allison Pearson. £12.99
Wildly witty, clever and touching, with a gorgeous and compelling twist, I Think I Love You asks what happens when the man you thought you loved turns out to be somebody else entirely…

An A-Z of Hellraisers By Robert Sellers, £20
This is the last word on drunken misbehaviour. This hilarious volume salutes a miscreant mob from Winston Churchill to Ozzy Osbourne.

Summer Play

Love it or loathe it, World Cup fever has arrived and will be this summer’s focus. If you’re female, it’s probably the best time to hit the shops, if you’re male you will undoubtedly be glued to your (new) flat screen, HD telly keeping your eye firmly on the ball.

For those times in between games, you can’t beat a summer blockbuster and chilling to the soundtrack of summer’s music festivals. So stock up on CDs and fire up the BBQ. Summer is here.

Oasis: Time Flies.... 1994-2009
The complete singles collection spanning fifteen glorious years of Oasis. These could be the best days of our lives. And they were. And they still are. Oasis entertain on every level.

Mad Men (Season 3)
This outstanding biopic recreates the life and times of the gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk. It’s a shocking reminder of how far we’ve come and how dangerous it is to take freedom for granted.

Gorillaz: Plastic Beach

Blur’s Damon Albarn's ability to diversify musically shows no signs of slowing down. Collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Gruff Rhys, De La Soul, Little Dragon and more make this a truly special album.

Summer Memories

Since March we’ve been running our People’s Perth campaign, in conjunction with The Courier, to celebrate Perth 800. Many of you have brought in fabulous pictures of major events in Perth over the years, and you have equally interesting stories to tell us!

Pictured here are some of the images brought in over the last three months (clockwise from top): Princess Elizabeth inspects the Black Watch in Perth with the Queen in 1946, Staff at Alexander Buses at Perth Station in 1954, The Black Watch receive the Freedom of the City in late 1940s, and a Perth Baptist Church Outing in the 1950s.

It’s not too late the get involved! Bring your pictures in on the first Saturday of every month between 11am and 3pm and tell us the story behind the images.
