An Ice Escape

Fancy getting away from it all this summer? We’ve teamed up with Thomson Holidays and The Courier to bring you a competition guaranteed to get you into the summer mood.

Exclusively at St John’s Shopping Centre, Perth, you could be in with a chance to win a fabulous family holiday for four (two adults, two children) to Disneyland Resort Paris. All you need to do is enter our “Melting Mickey” competition, run in conjunction with The Courier, and guess how long it will take Mickey Mouse, encased in a large block of ice, to melt.

Mickey Mouse arrives in St John’s Shopping Centre on Friday 11th July early in the morning, and he will be completely encased in ice. We’ll set the timer and you can watch the proceedings online on our dedicated web cam. If you think you know how long Mickey might take to melt, then pop out, buy your copy of The Courier and fill in your entry form. Your guess will need to be correct right down to the second to win.

The first correct guess pulled out of the hat will be jetting off for a holiday of a lifetime at the Disneyland Resort Paris in conjunction with Thomson Holidays. If you can’t wait that long, pop into Thomson’s in the shopping centre to see what else is on offer. Melting Mickey competition entries open Monday 6th July in The Courier.

Duvet Day

Now is the perfect time to load up on your holiday reading. Waterstones in St John’s Shopping Centre, Perth, have picked four books which they expect to be this summer’s top reads.

So pop on down and pick up a great read for those hot summer nights.

Swimsuit by James Patterson, £18.99
A breathtakingly beautiful supermodel disappears from a swimsuit photo shoot at the most glamorous hotel in Hawaii.

Only hours after she goes missing, Kim McDaniels' parents receive a terrifying phone call. Fearing the worst, they board the first flight to Maui and begin the hunt for their daughter.

"Swimsuit" is a heart-pounding story of fear and desire, transporting you to a place where beauty and murder collide and unspeakable horrors are hidden within paradise.

Little Strangers By Sarah Waters. £16.99
Little does Dr Faraday know how closely, and terrifyingly, his patient’s story is about to become entwined with his. A chilling ghost story.

Angels Game By Carlos Ruiz Zafron, £18.99
Set in the turbulent 1920s, The Angel's Game takes us back to the gothic universe in a masterful tale about the magic of books and the darkest corners of the human soul.

The Strain By Guillermo del Toro, £12.99
A plane lands at JFK and stops in the middle of the runway for no reason, all lights off, all doors sealed. High-concept thriller with a supernatural edge.

"Me" Day

You can’t beat a summer blockbuster film and as we enter the season of music festivals, it’s undoubtedly time to stock up your CD racks with the newest tunes to help you boogie.

Whatever it may be, no-one gets you closer to the stuff you love this summer than HMV in St John’s Shopping Centre, Perth.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Winner of three Oscar’s, this film is the skilful telling of the tale of a man born old, getting younger as time goes by.

Based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story, it’s Benjamin’s short but doomed personal relationships that capture the imagination. The ageing (and anti-ageing) effects are so effortless than you’ll barely notice them and merely accept that Brad Pitt is indeed getting younger and not older as you would expect.

This is a gem of a film that simply gets better and better.

Music for Men
In store: 22 June
A hugely anticipated follow-up to Gossip’s Standing In The Way Of Control, this has a funky garage-rock vibe, influenced by ‘80s Goth rock. Guaranteed dance floor filler.

Milk
In store: 8 June
This outstanding biopic recreates the life and times of the gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk. It’s a shocking reminder of how far we’ve come and how dangerous it is to take freedom for granted.

West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
In store: 8 June
A musical journey through sky-scraping melodies, electro-punk riffs, Morricone-style symphonics, Mariachi stomps and psych-pop lullabies. Kasabian’s third album is it worth the wait.
